Down in Down Under - Diary - 02/08/02

informing taxing banking ...
Again a multipurpose day. We went to the council office at half ten
and have been really impressed. In contrast to Germany the people are
very nice and competent. We again got all information concerning the
program, opened our bank account and applied for a tax file number.
Afterwards we first deposit our money in our new accounts. On this
occasion we had a typical "aussie" situation. We have been searching
for an Amex shop to exchange our cheques and had no clue where to go,
when a nice guy just offered us to show to go. He said, he has to go nearly
the same way and could show us where to go. On the way we had a nice chat.
After that we went to the bank. We were surprised - in this branch there
were ten teller and numbers to pull. Therefore everything was done really quick.
Then we all met in the council office, to discuss, what will happen now.
Meanwhile we have been a group of five people that agreed to spend the first
time together. We checked a few offers for accomodation and decided to stay
with WTA (Working Travellers Accomodation). They usually just offer rooms for
long term, with good equipment (tv, ...), proper kitchen, and so on.
Council kindly phoned them and arranged a meeting for tommorow 12 am. Then
we will have a look. If everything is alright, we will stay in Sydney for the
next ten days to think about all the things we want to do next and then start
travelling. Within these days propably a little bit casual work, get over the
jet lag, receive the ATM-Card and then, let's go.
That's how easy it is!? Now we had got rid of the first worries and did a little
shopping. Back at the hostel we wanted to have dinner in the kitchen. The
kitchen unfortunately was a little bit small (not even two people can fit in there)
and we spontanously decided to have "stair dinner" (have a look on the pictures).
Then in the evening we went to the monorail. We did at least four circuits. First
there were many things we had to take pictures of, then some sydneysiders jumped
into our car and we chatted about work. They just started a few calls to check
some things out (another aussie situation). Finally we wanted to do a nice group pic.
After that we headed to harbour bridge. Today we wanted to climb it. When we
arrived at the stairs, we have been surprised by the great panorama. Undescribable
this scenery. Then we crossed the bridge and had a look on the city from the other side.
Tomorrow we will get up early, to check out of the wanderers, go to council and have a look
for jobs and accomodation.
