Down in Down Under - Diary - 14/08/02

sydney to cairns
Today we were supposed to head for the north. We have been sick of the bad and rainy weather during
the last days in Sydney and that's why we were pretty lucky. Every day rain and wind.
Somehow the winter has to prove his presence.
We used the Airport Express to go to the Domestic Terminal of Virgin Blue, the local cheap airline.
There we first thought we are not in the right place, because there wasn't anything written or
displayed anywhere. However after we checked in properly we startet our journey to Cairns with a
small 737. You are not offered very much on a flight with Virgin Blue, but they try to do the best.
There is for example a "big" merchandising show and at the end of the flight wake-up aerobics.
Arriving at Cairns, we were welcomed by the summer, with tropical temperatures at 26°C during the
winter oneself is just feeling better. Then we called our favourite backpackers and were picked up
by them. We had a look on everything and after we had checked in we started a for a little walk
around the place. Theoretically you get a free evening meal in town. After our past experiences
concerning free offers we are a little sceptical concerning this. We will have a look and can
just be set right.
And it is real, we should be able to get a free evening meal at a pub in town every evening. If
you are really hungry you won't be filled up, but for little amounts you can upgrade to really
good things. So we sat at the Whool Shed until 11pm had a few beers after the meal -
the nice XXXX-Beer - probably comparable to american beer, and went back to the
Castaways.
