rainforest
On my probably last day in Cairns for the moment I went to go up to Kuranda by Skyrail. From the city
you can go to the lower station for just one Dollar. There I got on to the Skyrail, which was awarded
lots of prizes during the last couple of years. On a distance of 7,5km a cable railway with two
stops was errected. Trying not to damage the rainforest, they used helicopters to transport and position
the more then 30 piers. On the way up you can see the several zones of the rain forest - fascinating.
Looking down you cannot see the ground - typically for rainforest. You experience the opposite walking
through the rainforest on the boardwalks. If you are lucky you even meet a ranger, who is somehow giving
a talk concerning all the different things on the ground of the rainforest. On the second you can see
the Barron Falls. These were a little bit boring and dry, probably due to the sunny weather. Something you
should do more likely during the rainy season.
Arriving in Kuranda, I decided to explore the surroundings, which I realised afterwards was a very good
decision. Here you find a some nice small rainforest hikes, which are consisting of several small parts
- to ensure that the tourist does not has to walk too far. Fortunately you can combine these tracks
pretty good. Finally I walked through really nice rainforest for nearly three hours. It is still pretty
hard to realise, that you just can walk into the rainforest here. Meanwhile everything is developed for
tourists here, but the rainforest does not seems to suffer. You even can find several animals. It is just
not so easy to take pictures of them with my DigiCam.
After my hike I had a look into the town centre and had to realise that it contains just of souvenir shops.
And all the people spend lots of money..., crazy. I have never seen so many people walking around with
shrink wrapped didgeridoos. With most of the people they probably end up in a corner of the living room -
never played (a part of them in my opinion is not playable anyway).
Later the 1-Dollar-Bus came around again, and I went back to Cairns. Arriving here I jumped onto the
backpacker-bus to get to the coach terminal and from there to Innisfail in the evening.
The rainforestpictures are separate again, of course.
