bananas, you know
First day of work:
Getting up at 5:30, then quick breakfast and getting ready for work. At ca. 6:30 waiting in front of the
hostel. Shawn from Belfast is coming around. He is living next door and works on the same farm. A few
minutes later our pick-up is arriving - the boss in person. At 7:00 after arriving on the farm we are
starting to work immediately. Two workers, Shawn and me are going straight into the paddocks. There
they quickly explain to me, what I have to do: humping bananas. This basically means to carry the bunches
of bananas, which just have been cut down form the tree, to the transporter. Really heavy these bunches,
and as it started to rain a little bit later the degree of difficulty was increasing dramatically. Then at
ca. 10:00 we had the first small break - smoko. Afterwards we went into the paddocks again, of course. At
ca. 13:30 again a break - lunch - and then into the paddocks again until 16:30. Literaly, a cool day.
I am still surprised that I did not get a cold. But this, as the locals say, due to the climate up here,
is not so dangerous. In the evening I of course was pretty knackered. The day here seems to be far more
shorter as well. It is winter of course and the sun is setting earlier. So you are sitting on the balcony
at eight/nine and it seems to be much later. This impression is caused by the high temperatures. A
European is concluding warm and dark of course - late summer night.
