atherton tablelands

This weekend we made our camping trip to the tablelands. After we managed to start Chris' car, with the help of jump leads, we finally left Innisfail at about 4:30 p.m. This time we didnīt forget to refill the tank. Soon we were on Palmerston Highway heading towards Millaa Millaa. When we arrived there we seized the opportunity to go shopping in a supermarket and a bottleshop. Afterwards we built up our tents at the nearest camping site. Soon it was getting dark. Since there was no fireplace left on the campingsite we couldnīt make a campfire and had only candles. But we had a nice evening. Chris fell asleep with still holding a cigar in his hand and snoring like a pig. Drew brought his md-recorder with him and so we couldnīt resist recording Chrisī snoring sounds. Some time at about ... everybody was asleep. I was too lazy to creep into somebodyīs tent and so I spent the night under the starry sky on a Therm-a-rest mat. On Saturday morning we drove a bit back on Palmerston Highway to see all the waterfalls we missed Friday evening. Millaa Millaa Falls - Zillie Falls - Ellinjaa Falls - it was really impressive how many but very different waterfalls there can be seen. Afterwards we headed towards Yungaburra. We had no real plan and so we decided spontanously to go to lake Eacham - a crater lake and a nice swimming spot. I decided to swim to the other side of the lake. In the end it was much longer than I had thought (later I had a look on the map and recognized that one way was about 800 m). The next tourist attraction was the Curtain Fig Tree - a unique structure of roots because the host tree fell into the neighbouring tree. Afterwards we were heading on to Atherton. Here we did some shopping and since there was nothing else to see, we went on to Lake Tinaroo. On the way we stopped to gather some wood for our campfire. Half an hour later we finally reached the reservoir. There are lots of campsites around the lake. But the thing is that you just fill in the receipt yourself and put the money in a box. After having build up our tents, we made our fire and cooked our dinner. We had delicious pasta - made by Chris (our food scientist). Later on we had grilled marshmellows. In the evening I went down to the lake with a book about astronomy to have a look at the stars in the southern hemisphere. But I realized that it is not easy to keep orientation here.
On Sunday morning my alarm clock rang at 5 a.m. - I wanted to watch the sunrise. Absolutely brilliant! I had to wait one hour (like always when doing such activities) till the sun rose up. But it was great. Later in the morning when we had packed up everything we went to Kuranda. So I saw this for the second time. But this time we were lucky because a two man band made a performance - Jabaru. Didge, Congas, Djembe, Flutes and Hammer Dulcimar - World Music. Absolutely fantastic. We bought two cdīs and in three weeks time we will go to the folk festival in Yungaburra.
Back at the Codge Lodge we celebrated Dallasī birthday till late night.

The pictures.
