Down in Down Under - Diary - 06/12/02

ingham - townsville - magnetic island
After a quick morning swim in Mission Beach we started for our next big stage - nearly 300 K's -
to Townsville. On this stretch I sensed a little bit of the outback the first time. On these parts
of the highway there is nothing apart from a few bigger towns. Cardwell for example just consists of
one big road. If there would not be so many power lines crossing the road, a jumbo jet could land
easily. In Ingham we wanted to check out the Wallaman Falls. They are the biggest in Australia with
a drop of 300m. Unfortunately these are drained at the moment - the first time for fifty years.
Actually we should go there exactly because of this, as many locals already did as well. But as it is 50km
gravel road we decided it is not worth it and just took a picture in the tourist information centre.
On the way to Townsville you really could see the drought. Innisfail and the tablelands are really green
even without rain in comparison to this. E.g. we saw a 30m wide river - completely dry.
Arriving in Townsville we first got some information concerning Magnetic Island. First we thought that
it would be cheaper to leave Dino somewhere in a car park and just take the necessary things, but then
we realised that it is nearly the same price and decided to go for the easier way and wanted to take
Dino over there. We even managed it
to get a ticket for the small car ferry and were on Magnetic Island just a little bit later. There we
checked in to Arkies Resort, where we will book our diving course tomorrow as well. Here we met Mike
(from Codge Lodge) again.
In the evening they showed "lord of the rings" yet again. I do not know how many times I could have watched
this movie now already.
