the reef

After being certified divers now we finally were on the way to the Reef today. We were supposed to be at Picnic Bay Jetty at nine o'clock. As usual we were a little bit late and saw a ferry at the jetty so we hurried up to get there. Arriving there we realised that nobody of our group was there and that the ferry was going to Townsville. Then somebody told us that the Reef ferry is going at 9:20. A few minutes later Brendan and Joe arrived with all the equipment and when the ferry arrived we were on our way. Unfortunately the ferry was carrying 140 children from two schools in Townsville today as well, who of course had lots of fun and produced a corresponding volume, very relaxing! In comparison to this the fifteen "Wilden Hummeln" ("wild bumblebees" - a little kindergarten, where I did my social service) always were very quiet. I chatted with Brendan about the road to Radical Bay and he said that even the gravel road to Westpoint (4WD recommended) is in a much better condition.
Arriving at the reef ponton we immediately went on to a little vessel to get to our first dive spot. When I finally managed to equalize my ears I could even enjoy the wonderful colourful corals on the first dive. Fascinating what a big variety of colours there is. Underwater everything of course seems to be a lot bigger and thus we saw lot of big fish. In comparison to Alma Bay the visibility here was nearly unlimited, as you know it from underwater movies - 15-20m - that is just enough;-) After this 30 minute dive in maximum 15m depth we went back to the ponton for a huge bbq lunch. After lunch we went back into the water right underneath the ponton - literally fully loaded up. Now we wanted to see some fishfeeding. Brendan advised us to hide our hands as the fish is getting a little bit aggressive during feeding. This indeed was the case. Somehow you cannot even blame the fish as we were surrounded by fish - to little food for to much fish. After this we went to see a little bit more of the sandy part of the Reef around the ponton. Here we even discovered some strange inhabitants of the Reef. When we finally were back at the ponton we had just a few minutes left to do some snorkelling. Back on the ferry everybody had to sign in to be back on board. So this is quite secure and stories about people who got lost on the reef to a certain degree have to be ascribed to the people themselves. Due to the high noiselevel the long way back was quite strenuous.
In the evening we stayed at Arkies and listened to the strange footballdiscussions (football=soccer) which were led by crazy english football sick Mike;-)
