Down in Down Under - Diary - 14/12/02

little black reef, fej's bommie and hamilton island

Today we had to get up really early, as we were supposed to do three dives in the morning to go back to the islands for the night. Before breakfast all advanced divers went on there deep dive. As predicted I had my problems to get down there in time due to my funny ears - partly the excitement played its part as well. All this was even worse as due to the risk of decompression sickness you cannot stay down there for so long. On this dive we had 20 minutes in total for example. To be conservative we planned for 18 minutes: 3 to 4 minutes to get down, 8 minutes down there, 3 minutes to decompression stop in 5 meters and then 3 minutes to do this stop. Luckily Alex, one of our divemasters, went down with us additionally to Kerry and helped me as it took more than 6 minutes for me to get down. When I finally arrived down there nearly all of my buddies had already finished their tests. The accent for me was the best thing as I could enjoy the marvelous and colourful underwaterworld. So finally I managed to do the for me most difficult part to get an advanced diver and enjoyed the brilliant breakfast.
After breakfast to more dives for the advanced divers should follow. First the underwater naturalist dive - observe the underwater flora and fauna a little bit - and second the peak performance buoyancy dive. There for training we had to swim through a hoop. Controlling your performance at a peak level saves a lot of energy. Finishing both of these things I am advanced open water diver now. After another yummy lunch we had a break for the next six hours - the time you need to get back to the whitsunday islands. We did all the paperwork and I went for a decent nap. In the evening we arrived at a little bay called blue pearl bay at the northwestern edge of Hamilton Island. There we wanted to do our second night dive later this evening. This time we were followed by a big Potato Cod, who we even could have fed (if there would have been little fish around). If you shine your torch onto little fish they are confused and stop, that is the possibility for the cod to strike. Apart from that it still was a fantastic dive. Unfortunately not without stress, as you are losing your dive buddy pretty quick in the crowded water.

and again --- pictures --- thanks to Achim.
