rum and turtles in bundaberg

Our next destination down the coast was Bundaberg. I was surprised positively by this town. In contrast to many other cities here Bundaberg has a proper city centre. You can nearly say a historical city centre. After getting a little bit information we went straight on to the rum distillery. This is another one of these overrated things. It was interesting to see all this, I just expected all this to be much more bigger. Finally you are walking around there from point to point for half an hour and learn something about how rum is produced in this fairly small distillery. All this is quite marketing orientated and of course after having a taste at the end you are invited to buy some of the reduced products.
Back at the car park we met some Austrians - travelling with a VW 4WD-Van (registered in Austria) they already travelled through the whole of Africa and are visting Australia for half a year now before going over to South America.
In the evening we went to Mon Repos Beach Caravan Park to stay there for the night and watch the turtle rookery on the beach later this evening. This is pretty the only place in Australia where you can watch turtles laying their eggs during the night. This whole procedure takes nearly two hours and we had the possibility to watch this closely.
The turtle is crawling up the beach and looking for a nice place in the dunes. Then, after a certain time she starts to dig a 60cm deep hole for the eggs with her rear fins. Once this is done she starts to lay up to 130 eggs into this hole. Then she is closing the hole again and hardens the ground as she is sitting on this spot the whole time with her 120kg. Afterwards she is crawling down into the sea again.
