fraser island - I
Fraser we are coming - today we got up at six, quickly checked out, had breakfast and went to the
4WD-Shed. There Rob and me inspected the car and the others checked the camping gear. Then everything
was stowed away. We received a little bit more information concerning driving and camping on Fraser Island
and then went on our way to the ferry. We did a little stop at Whoolworths to get some ice for the eskies,
but still were at the jetty before time. There we discovered a little crack in the windscreen of the Landcruiser.
Just to be sure and not to be held responsible afterwards we decided to phone the shed. They just answered:
"No worries!"
The ferry arrived at the jetty at ten. As the ferry is open to traffic just on the bow I had to reverse onto it
(with this big tank not very easy). On Fraser Island the trek was changing from a proper gravel road to lose
sand pretty quickly. After just a few K's we got stuck the first time. We had been told that we will not have
to lower the pressure of the tyres and would not need to use Low4 at all, if we do not want to go past Indian Head.
Wrong information - we decreased the pressure a little bit and with L4 we went on pretty easy. To drive through
lose sand with the Landcruiser in 4WD-mode probably is like a little boat, you are kind of floating. Here and there
you can even feel how each of the four wheels is digging its way through the sand.
After a certain time (you cannot drive faster than 20 K's under these conditions) we arrived at the beach on the
eastern side of the island. Here the speed limit is "just" 80 K's and so we went on a little bit faster. At Rainbow
Gorge we had our first stop - lunch. After everybody had his or her little snack we went on a little walk through
Rainbow Gorge. However more than half of the group gave up already before we got to see the main sensation of
Rainbow Gorge. The last four, Fiona, Sam and me went up the dunes and first were rewarded with a spectacular
view. If there is a way to get higher, you of course want to go higher and so we went up the next big dune as well.
When walking we suddenly realised that the sand below the surface is changing its colour every few metres -
white, yellow, brown, black - incredible. This probably can be explained by the different portions of certain
elements. Then we even found little pieces of metal rising from the ground - like some old rusty scrap. However
definitely nobody could have dropped anything here, this is part of the ground.
After this we went to the famous Eli Creek. Here you can cool down after walking 200m. If you are brave enough
and jump into the cold water and swim a little bit, you will realise that there is quite a strong current -
speeding down the creek without fins!
Now we had to hurry up a little bit as we wanted to get to Indian Head for tonight. We wanted to eat and set up
the camp before it got dark, of course.
The decision where to camp at Indian Head however took a certain time. Finally we decided to camp right on the beach in
a little protected corner near Indian Head. Usually you are not allowed to camp on the beach so we had to take this
possibility. After all the tents were set up in a little circle we started to cook - bbq on a gas stove. Later we
sat down around the "camp fire" - no fire - with didge and music and wine and beer and, and, and ..., and finally
ended up building sand castles.
the --- pictures --- of course seperate. Thanks to Steven, who
contributed a few of these.
