fraser island - II

After half of the group watched the sunrise at Indian Head this morning (which actually was not so spectacular - but is looking quite good on the pictures) we went to the Champagne Pools at nine. This was further than expected and everybody was quite glad when we finally arrived there. Here the waves are cut by some rocks and the water breaks into a little pool. The rocks scatter the water so much that it really looks like champagne. We enjoyed this little natural whirlpool for quite a long time. Back at the car we went on with our sightseeing - Coloured Sands and Pinnacles. These are beautiful sandstone formations right at the coast.
Then we went on to the Maheno Wreck, which run aground during a storm in 1935. It is quite rotten meanwhile and supposedly will be removed soon because of the increasing risk of injury when climbing.
After this we went to Lake Wabby, a small lake in between steep dunes. As we were in a little hurry we decided to drive there instead of walking. On the map this idea was looking pretty reasonable. However the trek there was longer than expected and you still had to walk for a few K's to get down to the lake, so we did not save any time. Lake Wabby is absolutely fascinating. I cannot really estimate how steep it is, but e.g. it is already dangerous to run into the water as you cannot stop anymore. We finally spend more time than originally planned and it was already getting dark when we were back at the car. So we decided to camp at Lake MacKenzie. After 20K's through the inner island we arrived at the camp site in the dark just to get the confirmation that it is already filled up. So we had to go on to Central Station. When we arrived here we at least got a good spot and a nice bbq - finally it seemed to become a nice evening.
When preparing dinner we spotted two parasites crawling out of a little grasshopper - yummy.
