Today we had a somehow "fully booked" day. In the morning we got up really early to be at
Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary before all the tourists are arriving. First we watched "the" animal.
Although you often cannot be sure that they really are living creatures. The koalas are basically
just hanging around in their tree and are literally stoned (due to the eucalyptus). Afterwards we
saw a wombat, lorikets, a tasmanian devil and of course roos. At the roo enclosure more and more mainly japanese tourists
arrived as well and it was quite difficult to get a picture of a roo without a human being on it. Soon we
went back to Brisbane to do some shopping. As you can see on the pictures you are not even safe from roos in
the big cities anymore.
At noon we left Brisbane for Surfers Paradise. On the way we experienced our first proper motorway in
Australia - four lanes most of the time along the Goldcoast from Brisbane to Surfers. Until now I thought that
something like that cannot be found outside of big cities here. Surfers Paradise is a little bit strange -
probably to be compared with one of these spanish touristy places - sheer concrete jungle - one hotel next to
the other. There we met Jenni from Innisfail again for few minutes, jumped into the pool at her hostel to cool
down and decided to move on into Lamington Nationalpark already for tonight. On the way into the mountains we
could see a strange scenery in the approaching sunset: in the foreground we were surrounded by pure nature and
rainforest and in the background in the distance of the valley you could see the skyline of Surfers. Unfortunately
as usually I thought I could get this picture on the way back as well and we did not stop. At the ranger station in
Binna Burra we got the information that the local caravan park is booked out. They offered us yet that we can camp
at Graceleighpark near Beechmont for one night. Nice to get free camping info from a ranger.
