Down in Down Under - Diary - 29/12/02

hiking through lamington nationalpark

Today we wanted to do another big walk. At breakfast we decided to go for the Ship's Stern Range circuit - a nice walk to Ballunjui Falls, further on to Ship's Stern Range and back. When we arrived at the falls after five K's downhill there really was some water. Now we went up on the other side of Kurragin Valley - up to Ship's Stern Range. In my opinion this was the most strenuous part and when we arrived up there we unexpectedly had already done more then half of the way. A good point to have a little break and some lunch. If you ignore the "strange" trees and bush at the lookout you could imagine to be somewhere in Bavaria or Austria, the landscape at least gives you this impression. I never thought that the Great Dividing Range has such a big extent anyway. Down the whole coast you just have to go into the hinterland a little bit and are in the highlands.
After a few minutes we went on. We thought that we should hurry up a little bit if we want to get to Springbrook Nationalpark today. From the upper end of Ballunjui Falls we had another nice view into Kurragin Valley before going back up to Binna Burra. There we quickly jumped into the van and went to Springbrook. On the way it repeatedly started to rain cats and dogs. The camp there was absolutely basic, not even light in the bbq area - but what do you expect from a free nationalpark camp site.
