Down in Down Under - Diary - 30/12/02

springbrook and byron bay

In Springbrook Nationalpark we wanted to have a look at the Purling Brook Falls. Having a drop of 109m they are one of Australias biggest water falls. The nice thing here is that you can get right underneath the falls on a 4k track. As one part of the track currently is rehabilitated we unfortunately had to walk the same way up and down.
Afterwards we went to Natural Bridge, as well part of Springbrook but on the other end. There at some time the ceiling of a cave partly collapsed and created a waterfall right into the cave. In the night the cave is illuminated by glowworms. After this we went into the direction of Byron Bay. In between we crossed the border to New South Wales without even noticing it. The only thing we recognised were the changed traffic signs and so concluded that we must have left Queensland. You can find info signs in front of nearly every bend which advise you how fast you can go through this bend. In Queensland they are always 60, 70, 80, etc. and in New South Wales they obviously want to have a little bit variety and so the signs always end on 5, e.g. 65, 75, 85, etc. - quite funny as these 5 K's do not matter at all.
The area in the north of NSW between the coast and 60K's hinterland is called "the big scrub". Due to volcanic activity a "strange" landscape was formed here and if you ignore the fauna it could be somewhere in Central Europe as well. The rainforest is interupted by many meadows and fields with livestock. So this impression is pretty close.
Arriving in Byron Bay we of course first tried to get some accomodation. As everything was already booked out weeks in advance, this should not be very easy. You could see this as well in the city centre which was just packed. We called several caravan parks to get the confirmation that everything is already booked out. Now we started up plan b: André began to ask people if we could stay in their backyards. Of course we received many negative replies. When we were nearly hopeless to get something we found two properties with a few tents already set up in the backyard. So I went out again and asked and we were lucky. For just 10 bucks a night per person we could pitch our tent in the backyard and use all facilities in the house. Additionally to this, the house was just next to the city centre so that we did not had to use the car at all. The house is kind of shared accomodation and thus there is a really relaxed atmosphere anyway. When doing shopping at Whoolis suddenly Marcella crossed my way - completely unexpected. Originally she wanted to be at a friends in Melbourne but somehow got stuck here in Byron - quite small this world.
