Down in Down Under - Diary - 07/04/03

desert?
Actually we were supposed to be right in the desert already, not yet Nullabor, but on the right track, and it
is raining. Not all the time, but there are showers on and off. Leaving Penong we went to Yalata via Nundroo.
This is the last Roadhouse we used in SA. Just next door there is an Aboriginal Community, which really seems
to be very dreary. Just before Nullabor Roadhouse we finally went into the real Nullabor Plain - treeless desert.
From June till October you can spot Souther Right Wales down here at the coast. We are to early but hopefully
will meet them on their way south somewhere along the west coast. However, even if the wales are missing,
the coast is definitely worth a look.
Back at the Ranger's Station we met an English researcher and some inhabitants of this very dreary Aboriginal
Community. He is doing kind of coaching work there at the moment and tries to give these people back their
separate identity. For example he is trying to develope and carry out an OutbackTrek-Programm for the next
few months with a group of 400 people. In this way he first of all is providing jobs for the inhabitants of the
community and gives them the opportunity present their culture. Additionally we have the possibility to learn
a lot about their culture.
After another stop and a nice view onto the sea we went on for our last 200 kilometers to Western Australia. At
the border we had one of these infamous checks concerning fruits and vegetables eventually. They usually are
supposed to take place at every border here. So we had to hand out garlic, salad and honey. From here it is just
16025km to Berlin - meanwhile I covered two-thirds of this distance with Dino in Australia. Just 300km more and
we will arrive at our aim for today. Of course we are in a different time zone again and can set our clocks back
an hour again - the time difference to Europe is shrinking more and more.
On the way to Cocklebiddy Caves we of course had to pass the most expensive petrol station so far - 1,40 per
liter is still quite cheap for the prices in Germany, but for these big distances here it is really to expensive.
In Cocklebiddy we filled Dino up and then wanted to go on 20km to a rest area just next to the caves. It already
was getting dark and the danger to meet a Kangaroo somewhere was increasing unmeasurable. Of course there were no
signs anywhere, as usual in Australia, and thus we could not find this rest area. A little bit later we arrived
at some roadworks and asked for the rest area and the caves: "Just 4 k's back and 3 k's off the road!"
As we of course had not missed the sign, as there just was none, this was a leap in the dark. After 8km off road
and still no caves in sight, we decided that it was enough for today. As it really was dark and cool and furthermore
pretty windy, we decided without further ado to cook and eat inside the van and had quite yummy and cheap tomato
soup for dinner. Thereby we realised that there is astoundingly much space inside the van.
