last stage of nullabor
After spending the last night really in the middle of Nullabor the first task today of course was to get back
to the highway. Due to lots of rain last night and in the morning this turned out not to be an easy task
- rallye. However Dino did a good job, although he is missing four-wheel-drive, which would have been
appropriate here.
After this we went to Caiguna and following this onto the longest straight "piece" of road in Australia
- 146,6 km straightforward. Afterwards there was another roadhouse in Balladonia and after 200km more we
had crossed the entire Nullabor. In Norseman we filled up petrol again and received our certificate for
successfully crossing Nullabor at the tourist information. Then we went onto our way to Kalgoorlie
- Australias gold capital. This sprawling city right in the middle of nowhere - more than 30 000 inhabitants
- is supposed to be a little bit rough. In 1893 Paddy Hannanm, an irish gold prospector, left Coolgardie.
At this time this was the booming town in search of gold. He had not to go very far and discovered gold
where Kalgoorlie is situated today. Over the years it of course was getting more and more difficult to find
gold and they dug deeper and deeper. Today the last little pieces within the earth are mined with very
modern technology.
We finally went to a caravan park and had nice KangarooBBQ in the evening - quite a strange flavour, but
quite alright. Later we went into the city and into a pub, right in the middle of the week it was nothing
happening there - so after all this place is not very rough!
