gold country
Certainly we did not want to stay just over night in Kalgoorlie and so we decided at least to spend the morning
here in town. First we went on the historical "radio play tour" presented by the caravan park. Such a thing,
although a good idea, naturally is not suiting to everyones liking and timing driving and listening is not
very easy and so we stopped the whole thing after a certain time. Well, the part we experienced was quite
nice. For example we visited Hammond Park, this one is not so huge, but regularly used for things like open air
cinema, etc. Their a little miniatur castle from South Tyrol(Italy) can be seen as well. Afterwards we went
to the Museum of the Goldfields and learned something about the history of Kalgoorlie and gold mining.
Then we went to North Tourist Mine, an old mine not used anymore, which offers tourists the possibility to
descend into the world of mining a little bit. There we did an Underground Tour, where you could experience
really directly for youself, that you do not want to do a job like that. Me of course due to my
body height and then due to the environment down there. Even if a lot of work is done computer controlled today
and there are not many people working down there at all anymore.
After the Underground Tour we could experience to pan for gold and I actually really found something. Of course
I am not rich now, but it was worth the little fun. Finally we could watch somebody pouring gold.
Certainly it was not real gold - this was given away afterwards, as the safety risk is to high. However
bronze is pretty similar to gold, just not so valuable. Actually you can attend real gold pouring somewhere
here in Australia, but just with extensive safety arrangements, which of course takes all the fun away.
We had the possibility to experience it very close though and it had the effect it was supposed to have.
Afterwards we had a quick look into the Superpit. This is the biggest working mine in Australia. Once it
has finished its job, the whole project will have quite big dimensions: length 3,8km, width 1,35km and depth
500m. The huge trucks howevery still seem to be very small creeping up and down the ramps.
Meanwhile it was already late afternoon and after a few pictures in town and some shopping we left for
Perth. We did not want to drive so far anymore today and soon stopped at a nice rest area. There we
had nice dinner - absolutely homemade using fire.
