pinnacles in nambung np
After breakfast we went to Nambung Nationalpark really relaxed. There you can gaze the so called
Pinnacles. These are limestone pillars of up to five metres height - we did not see any of this size though.
The basic material of these strange occurences is lime from shells. This was transformed into sand
very rich of lime, which was moved inland by wind. Rain was rinsing down the lime into lower regions in
winter and this way strengthened the lower part of the dune. Now vegetation settled there and stabilised
the dunes. At the same time a layer of acidic earth and humus was formed on top of the silica sand, which
was left over by the rain. Due to roots more and more crevices were created over the years. Water rinsed
of the soft lime stone underneath the silica sand. The growing crevices were filled up by silica sand.
Later vegetation on top was foiled by wind and finally the sand was blown away as well. So eventually
these Pinnacles appeared.
It is astonishing that they are just situated in this region. Even if they are more than expected here
- they fill up an area of more than eight square kilometres - they can just be found in this little
area.
As we wanted to come back again for sunset, we did not stop there for so long. After a nice and refreshing
bath at Hangover Bay we went to Cervantes - everything sounds pretty Spanish there - and then on to the
rest area for tonight. After we relaxed there for quite a long time we wanted to go to the Pinnacles
again after dinner. I did not have any big expectations, as it was pretty cloudy, but Nicolas and David
persist and so we went. First of all I took the opportunity to get some pictures without tourists, which
was quite complicated in the afternoon. As we nearly wanted to leave again, the spectacle 'sunset'
suddenly started quite unexpected and really colourful. Due to the clouds this even was looking
more and more amazing. On the way back we found some roos at the side of the road - of course road kills.
