Down in Down Under - Diary - 19/04/03

geraldton
Early in the morning, or better to say during night, we went to the Pinnacles again to watch the sunrise
as well. This eventually was really unspectacular. Back at the rest area we had breakfast and then
we went of for Geraldton. Arriving there we first tried to find a tyre service - actually I would
have done good doing a wheel-alignment after doing my repairs in Innisfail, I thought I would not need
it, but now, the first damage symptoms could be seen - and then we of course wanted to get some
information about the virtual independent province in Australia, which was supposed to be around here
somewhere. After searching for a little time, we found a tyre service - this city is nearly double the
size of Innisfail, but seems to be behind the times. Of course they could not help us with a wheel-
alignment. After quickly checking out the museum, which provides detailed information about the Batavia,
which sunk directly in front of the coast of Geraldton in 1629, and some other ships of the Dutch East
India Company, we went to Coronation Beach. There you can find one of the biggest free-camping-areas
at the West Coast, which meanwhile is not free anymore. So even if you have to pay five bucks per night per
vehicle, which is still very cheap, there are just a few empty spots left. Apart from the fact that it
is pretty crowded, the facilities are not very inviting. After a little bath in the ocean we had dinner quite
soon and following this a comfy evening with some wine.
