Down in Down Under - Diary - 20/04/03

goodbye australia - for a few hours
After getting up late today on Easter Sunday - there are some times where something like that has to
happen as well - we went to Northhampton. Actually we just wanted to top up our water supplies. When
we found out, that we can have a shower for free there as well, we of course could not object to this offer.
Afterwards we were ready for an audience with Prince Leonard at Hutt River Province. Arriving there we
first of all received a visa in our passports. Now we were legal visitors. As Prince Leonard still is
in conflict with the Australian government somehow, he enjoys putting his visa next to the Australian one.
Then he showed us around in his capital and told us many stories on the creation of this little province.
Finally I took the possibility to write some post cards from this little country - of course something
unique.
Then we went on to Kalbarri national park, to see the first gorges on the West coast. The first thing on
the schedule was Ross Graham Lookout. Quite a nice view and after climbing a little bit you even can get
down to the little river. After this we went on to Hawks Head, another lookout situated at Murchinson River.
The gravel road leading there was the absolute minimum worth being labeled "road". The final decision how
to go along this road was just grit you teeth and go one with it at full speed. Although the car is shaking
and rattling everywhere, it does not take such a long time, the risk of damage is the same. Arriving there
we decided to stay there for the night, despite the many flies - unbelievable. Later a bikie joined us.
Born in Hungary he came to Australia at the age of eight and is living here now already for sixteen years.
Apart from other things he told us as well, that the second trek in the National Park is even worse than
the just survived gravel road leading here. So we decided to say goodbye to Kalbarri - it has to wait
for the return by 4WD - and go on further north tomorrow.
